The Illusion of Neutrality: Why ‘Colorblind’ AI is a Myth

Silicon Valley has long sold the dream of artificial intelligence (AI) as the pinnacle of neutrality—an impartial force immune to human bias. The promise is seductive: an algorithm that sees only data, unclouded by history, culture, or prejudice. But as scholars like Ruha Benjamin in Race After Technology and Cathy O’Neil in Weapons of Math Destruction have demonstrated, AI is anything but neutral. It does not exist in a vacuum; it is built by people, trained on historical data, and deployed within systems structured by inequality.

When people claim AI is “colorblind,” what they are really advocating is a system that ignores racial disparities while continuing to uphold them. This isn’t just an abstract philosophical debate; the belief in AI’s neutrality has dire consequences, from racist policing algorithms to hiring systems that exclude qualified candidates of color. AI doesn’t just reflect bias—it encodes and scales it, transforming existing inequalities into automated, unchallengeable realities. The myth of “colorblind” AI is one of the most dangerous illusions of our time, and dismantling it is essential.

The Origins of Bias in AI

To understand why AI is not neutral, we must examine its origins. AI systems learn from data, and that data reflects the world as it is—not as it should be. If historical hiring practices discriminated against Black applicants, an AI trained on that data will learn to do the same. If police have disproportionately arrested people of color for decades, an AI designed to predict crime will simply reinforce those patterns.

Bias enters AI at multiple points in its lifecycle:

1. Data Collection: If a facial recognition system is trained primarily on white faces, it will perform worse on people of color. Studies have shown that commercial facial recognition systems have significantly higher error rates for Black and Brown faces than for white ones.

2. Algorithmic Design: AI developers make subjective choices about what to prioritize. Should an AI hiring tool favor candidates with Ivy League degrees? If so, it will exclude many Black and Brown applicants, not because they lack talent, but because systemic barriers have historically limited their access to elite universities.

3. Implementation: Even if an AI system were trained on diverse data, it still operates within a biased world. Predictive policing algorithms may claim neutrality, but if deployed in over-policed neighborhoods, they will continue to disproportionately target Black and Brown communities.

Because many AI systems operate as “black boxes,” even their creators struggle to explain their decisions—allowing biased outcomes to persist with little oversight. The result? AI doesn’t erase bias; it encodes it, amplifying discrimination at speeds no human could match, all while hiding behind the illusion of objectivity.

The “Colorblind” Fallacy

The concept of colorblindness has long been used as a rhetorical tool to deny the existence of systemic racism. The argument goes: if we stop talking about race and treat everyone the same, racism will disappear. But history has shown that ignoring race doesn’t eliminate discrimination—it allows it to persist unchecked.

AI colorblindness follows the same flawed logic. Tech companies often claim that by not considering race in their algorithms, they are ensuring fairness. But this approach ignores how racial inequality is already embedded in the data. Take credit scoring systems, for example. These systems don’t explicitly factor in race, yet they systematically disadvantage Black borrowers because they are built on a financial history shaped by redlining, employment discrimination, and wage gaps.

Some argue that considering race in AI decision-making constitutes “reverse discrimination.” However, ignoring race does not create fairness—it simply perpetuates historical discrimination. AI should be designed not to reinforce past injustices but to counteract them.

The Real-World Consequences

This failure to account for race is not theoretical—it is already shaping real-world outcomes, disproportionately harming marginalized communities. Consider these examples:

1. Policing and Criminal Justice: Predictive policing algorithms claim to use data to prevent crime but, in practice, disproportionately target Black and Brown neighborhoods. These systems rely on historical arrest data, which reflects decades of racially biased policing. The result? A feedback loop where communities that have been over-policed in the past continue to be over-policed in the future.

2. Hiring Discrimination: AI-powered hiring tools, marketed as fair and efficient, have been found to discriminate against women and people of color. Amazon scrapped an AI hiring tool after discovering it penalized resumes that included words like “women’s,” as in “women’s chess club.” The system had learned from past hiring patterns that favored men and simply carried those biases forward.

3. Healthcare Disparities: AI is increasingly used to guide medical decisions, yet biased algorithms have been found to underestimate the severity of Black patients’ illnesses. A 2019 study revealed that an AI system used to allocate healthcare resources was less likely to refer Black patients for additional treatment, even when they had the same level of need as white patients. This bias arose because the AI relied on past healthcare spending as a proxy for health risk—and Black patients, due to systemic racism, had historically received less medical care.

4. Facial Recognition and Surveillance: Facial recognition technology has repeatedly been shown to misidentify people of color at higher rates than white individuals. In 2018, the ACLU found that Amazon’s Rekognition software falsely matched 28 members of Congress to criminal mugshots, with Black and Latino lawmakers disproportionately affected. Despite these flaws, law enforcement agencies continue to adopt facial recognition systems, increasing the risk of wrongful arrests and racial profiling.

What Can Be Done? Solutions for Ethical AI

If AI is inherently biased, how do we fix it? While no single solution exists, several strategies can help mitigate harm:

• Diverse and Representative Training Data: AI should be trained on datasets that reflect diverse racial, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds to reduce bias at the source.

• Transparency and Accountability: AI decision-making processes should be more explainable and auditable, allowing independent oversight of potential biases.

• Bias Detection and Mitigation Tools: AI models should be regularly tested for bias, with mechanisms in place to correct discriminatory outcomes.

• Regulation and Ethical Standards: Governments and industry bodies must establish policies ensuring AI systems do not perpetuate systemic inequalities.

• Inclusive AI Development Teams: Ensuring diversity among AI developers can help prevent blind spots and improve ethical considerations in AI design.

The promise of “colorblind” AI is not just misleading—it’s dangerous. Ignoring race doesn’t create fairness; it allows discrimination to persist, unchecked and unchallenged. If we truly want technology to be fair, we must acknowledge racial inequities and take deliberate action to address them. Only then can AI be a tool for justice rather than an instrument of oppression.
